At-risk.
That was the label for me and my friends. We were below the poverty line. From single-parent households. Of color.
We were “at-risk youth,” meaning we were statistically more likely to fall into drugs, crime or gasp teenage pregnancy. 🙄
But no one ever told us that we were also at risk of being bold.
Of being audacious.
Or even how much audacity we already had by simply believing we could be the first college grads in our families. That it would be that level of faith that would allow us to reach further than our ancestors’ dreams.
You see, risk is made to be a bad word. Something to measure. And should the rewards not add up, said risk simply isn’t worth it.
Well, bump that.
Audacity is really “faith.”
